Zanzibar
Asante Zanzibar
Asante: Impressions of Zanzibar
Just off the coast of Tanzania, Zanzibar holds a unique place in East Africa. Here, centuries of African, Arab, and Indian Ocean influences come together. From the historic streets of Stone Town to its bright white beaches and mangrove forests, the island offers rich culture and beauty. This collection comes from my time living with a local family near Stone Town in 2025. It is a personal reflection on the people, landscapes and enduring spirit that define Zanzibar.
Mangroove Roots
Central to the series are the remarkable mangrove forests. Their maze of exposed roots rises from the shoreline like sculptural forms. These ancient ecosystems protect coastal communities from monsoon tides and flooding.
They also stand as symbols of strength, adaptation, and interconnectedness.
Portrait Walls
Alongside these landscapes are portraits inspired by the people who welcomed me into their lives. Their presence emerges through layered compositions, where faces merge with weathered walls and textured surfaces. These works speak to memory, heritage and perseverance, acknowledging both the challenges and the extraordinary generosity that characterise many communities on the island. Smiles, shared stories, and strong family bonds become visual motifs.
They convey a deep sense of dignity and belonging.
The Collection
Together, the artworks create an intimate dialogue between place and people.
They capture the resilience, beauty, and cultural richness of East Africa. The title Asante means “thank you” in Swahili. It reflects both a gesture of gratitude and a tribute. It honors the communities whose warmth, hospitality, and enduring spirit inspired this work and will grace any interior who shares the same values.
